Thank you very much!.

- Transatlantic DX-FM - US FM stations received from Spain!!
Me senté a esperar.
This year’s "sporadic-E" season got off to a good start, with an African opening in late May, which brought me signals from several countries, including Togo for the first time. But the best was yet to come. That dream I’d always had – to cross the pond on FM – finally came true. It had almost sounded like mission impossible. But today’s technology has made it possible. SDRs (Software-Defined Radios) allow us not only to listen to the radio, but also to see the signals that populate the spectrum. On 19 July, whilst Spain were playing the football match that would earn them a second star on their shirt – as they were crowned World Champions by beating Argentina – the ionosphere decided to join in the celebrations, creating the right conditions for FM stations from the US to reach Spain. And not from areas closest to the Iberian Peninsula, but from the Carolinas, at distances well in excess of 6,000 km.
The usual stations from the Azores had been coming in strong for quite some time. No signals were coming in from anywhere else – not Italy, nor the Canary Islands, nor Morocco, the Sahara or Algeria. Just the Azores. I went to the pub where I’d arranged to meet up to watch the match (although I’m not much of a football fan, I do watch this sort of match) and, on arriving, I connected my mobile to my receivers in Aldea del Cano (Cáceres province). I saw that the Azores were still coming in strong but that, in addition, there were some strange signals, heavily distorted by propagation, which seemed suspicious to me. I set the SDRPlayDUO to record with a 7 MHz bandwidth (it can record up to 10 MHz, but above 7 MHz it loses sensitivity) and spent my time watching the crowd, who were already on the verge of a nervous breakdown. I’d check in every now and then to see how things were going, and the Azores signals kept coming in non-stop, and strong. The strange signals were still there too… sometimes strong, sometimes weaker, but they were there. The next day I set about checking what had happened during that opening. I wanted to see whether those signals were of any interest or not, but something told me that this wasn’t normal. The recording starts at 1838Z; at that time, two frequencies with abnormal signals were clearly visible: 93.3 and 92.1 MHz.
I tuned in to 93.3… the signal was coming and going erratically. The fading was very severe; the signal was weak with a few strong spikes, albeit of very short duration. I sat down to wait. And, a couple of minutes later, as the signal strengthened, a presenter was giving a telephone number and a website in English. First, I had to rule out the possibility that it might be an Irish or British station. Not British, because there are only BBC stations on that frequency and they don’t broadcast adverts. Not Irish either, because there are only two RTÉ stations broadcasting in Gaelic. And Canada?... there was a chance. I carried on listening. There were moments that looked promising for an ID, but nothing. I spent several hours on 93.3 trying to identify anything, but without luck. I wasn’t even sure where the signal was coming from. I switched to another frequency to see if it would give me any clue as to where the opening was pointing – and believe me, it certainly did! On 92.3, with a signal that was on average stronger than any of the other stations received, ‘92 3 The River’ was clearly identified. No station in Canada uses that name, but in the US they do! However, the station in question is much further away than I thought reasonable. After recording hours of its audio online, and searching for station identifications, I found the very same one I’d picked up from the other side of the Atlantic. It turned out to be WQSL-FM, which broadcasts from Jacksonville (North Carolina), 6,182 km away.
Over the following days, I’ve been identifying more stations, and I think there’s still a bit more to be found, as it seems to me that I’ve got two stations on 92.1 and 93.3:
88.10 USA WRJA-FM, Sumter (SC) 6444 km
92.10 USA WMNC-FM, Morganton (NC) 6462 km
92.30 USA WQSL-FM, Jacksonville (NC) (AUDIO) (VIDEO) 6182 km
93.30 USA WWWZ-FM "Z93 JAMZ", Summerville (SC) 6468 km
So far, I have sent reception reports to four stations: WQSL (to three people), WMNC, WWWZ and WRJA. Only one has replied so far:
WWWZ-FM - 93.3 MHz - "Z93 JAMZ" - Summerville, SC (USA) - QSL
Quite impressive E-skip for sure. Thank you for sending. I can confirm you did receive our station WWWZ-FM Charleston, South Carolina.
I have included a clip from our air signal skimmer to confirm receipt. This file is from 19 Jul 2026 1930Z to 1945Z.
The clip you recorded appears to be at 9 minutes and 36 seconds into the recording just after our commercial break.
